After JFK was assassinated the nation was devastated and Lyndon B Johnson took advantage of the unprecedented period to make civil reforms in 6 categories: poverty, medicare/medicaid, education, urban renewal, arts, and the environment.
I think that the most impactful legislation was the introduction of Medicare and Medicare. This is something that still continues to this day and it was huge in improving the lives of the poor and the elderly. I would argue that it also created the basis for more radical ideas like medicare for all as medical treatment is now seen as a basic right rather than a luxury.
I think that the least impactful reforms were the environmental ones. I honestly feel like we have gone backwards in this respect and it drives me insane. The president has pulled out of many of the international climate agreements and there are still 31% of Americans who don't believe that climate change is even real despite the scientific consensus and of course our president himself doesn’t believe in it. Additionally, climate regulations have decreased significantly over the last few years and overfishing and cooperate pollution still continue to be a huge issue in American cities.
