Why Fast Fashion Sucks

The fashion industry has a devastating impact on the environment; it is the second-largest polluter in the world. The treatment of fabrics releases synthetic chemical waste into waterways and harms aquatic life.

Fashion textiles are responsible for more than 20% of global water pollution. This disregard for the environment has also created health risks in many developing countries as chemicals pollute waterways and microplastics enter the food chain.

Furthermore, the fashion industry wastes an unreasonably large amount of water. It takes around 200 tons of water to produce just a single ton of cotton. While they waste hundreds of gallons in order to maximize profits, many people struggle to find enough clean water to survive.

Perhaps most surprisingly, washing clothes also has an awful effect on the environment as microplastics are released into the oceans. Therefore, the fashion industry abuses natural resources in an effort to keep prices cheap and make money.
