The presidency of Barack Hussein Obama was a symbol of hope. A sign that the country was moving forward despite the white supremacy which remained deeply engrained in every aspect of society. His presidency continues to be relevant as it is venerated by liberals and detested by conservatives. Its symbolism is perhaps more significant than its legislative achievements, most of which have largely been undone much to the detriment of the country by the orange menace.
I think the real significance of Obama is his effect on all the African American children growing up and believing that they can also achieve despite the odds. The fact is that injustice based on race is tolerated in this country, sometimes even encouraged, and detrimental stenotypes coupled with little economic opportunity can have a devastating psychological impact, especially on kids. Obama’s presidency was a positive change, a step forward, however, it also brought out all of the problems with American political system and made the political discourse much uglier and hyper polarized. His presidency allowed for a controversial figure like Trump to become prominent.
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
- Barack Obama
