RBG Just Died- Now What

Ruth Bader Ginsberg died September 18at the age of 87. Her dying wish was not to have her seat filled until the next presidential election. Despite this, it is almost certain that the Republican-controlled White House and Senate will move forward with replacing her as soon as possible. This article took a look at a North Carolina Trump's rally were passionate supporters chanted “fill her seat,” and Trump discussed his plan to replace Ginsberg as soon as possible. It also describes the overwhelming grief over her death as people bring flowers and write messages in chalk to mourn the feminist icon.

We learned this week about popular sovereignty, the power of the people. Never have I felt more powerless and upset. I think this also makes the toxicity of the two-party system more apparent than ever. The sheer fact that there are people celebrating this woman's death because Republicans get a proper majority in the court is appalling. The “fill the seat” chant at Trump rally. The fact that Republican senators are rushing to nominate the justice just 45 days before the election, despite not nominating Merrick Garland 9 months before the election in 2016. Just the hypocrisy of it all. That's not to say Democrats wouldn’t be doing the exact same thing if the roles were reversed. Trump will now have appointed three justices to the supreme court, all in their 50s. I wonder what the implications of this will be in the future as Trump-appointed justices will control ⅓ of the court and possibly more. It’s also worrisome that one woman was standing between reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, DACA, and Trump's America. I can’t help but be scared for what is to come.
