Trump has long denied the reality of climate-changing calling it a “hoax”. As the west coast goes
up in flames, the president must come to terms with the consequences of his inaction on climate issues. The denial of climate change despite the scientific consensus is part of the Trump administration's general pattern of ignoring science. It is typical of the American government to take a laissez-faire approach to climate, however, Trump has aggressively fought to roll back regulations hindering any progress. This article goes on to explain parallels between the president’s approach to COVID and climate issues arguing that his disregard for science will have devastating impacts on the country.
Climate change is no longer a question of if, it's a question of how bad. As I look out my window and see the apocalyptic gloom I fear for the future. It’s immensely frustrating to see old men with questionable motives making decisions on climate issues that favor short-term profits to long-term consequences. Under the Trump administration, the climate has become a partisan issue that has prevented any comprehensive legislation. It is part of a larger theme of polarization in this country as there is a lack of agreement on everything: from pancake mix to a global pandemic. This has long been a theme in American politics but it’s undeniable that Trump hasn’t made it worse. By perpetuating the narrative that climate change is a “hoax” he contributes to the lack of empathy currently plaguing the country. By placing oil executives and climate change deniers in positions of power he makes it clear that he cares about profits more than the future of humanity. Partisanship on the issue of climate is particularly appalling and it only serves the rich oil executives. I wonder what the origins of this divide are. It is also interesting that 69% of the country believes in climate change, yet, most republican lawmakers don't. This is an issue that I am immensely passionate about as it directly affects my future but it's disheartening to know that most of the people making the decisions will not be affected by climate change and they would rather make a quick buck.
